Activities
Young Families
- Kids on Sunday: Conducted in conjunction with Family Worship service beginning at 9.30am. Children leave part way through that service for their own program (Kids Church). Program continues during school holidays with a different focus.
- Willy Wagtails and Blue Wrens: Two Play Groups for young children (0-4 years) and their parents, grandparents or carers held on Tuesdays and Friday’s from 9.30am to 11.30am during school term. These are structured programs registered under the ACT Playgroups Association. A fee of $3 per family per morning applies . Programs go into recess during school holidays.
- Kid’s Club: An energetic activity group for primary school age children (5 years to 12 years) conducted on Thursdays from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. The program is supervised by young adults and parents from the Church and includes an evening meal. A fee of $5 per evening applies. Program goes into recess during school holidays.

Youth and Young Adults

Friday evenings: Do you know about SPLAT?
It’s the name of our new youth group. See attached program. -
Sunday Evenings: A rotating monthly program is conducted at 6.30pm on Sunday evenings. The usual program is:
- First Sunday is an evening meal and a discussion
- Second Sunday is a bible study or visit to another church
- Third Sunday is a worship service with communion
- Fourth Sunday is a Taize service held in conjunction with the ACT Taize community.
- (Fifth Sunday of the Month) – Presbytery Youth Service
- Program goes into recess during school holidays.
- Special events: The young adults provide leadership for the weekly Kid’s Club, hold occasional fund raising events for missions work, occasional music evenings and participate with other Canberra youth in camps, trips, etc.
Craft

Annual Craft Show: This has been a feature of the WCUC annual calendar each October for some 18 years and involves most members of the congregation in one way or another. Crafts people and artisans from around the Canberra region are invited to exhibit their items for sale on a commission basis. Some goods are contributed by members of the congregation and an informal ‘men’s shed’ over preceding months produces goods for sale. Proceeds are directed to special projects.

Odd Stitchers: This craft group meets from 1.30 to 3.30pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month for fellowship, craft and afternoon tea
- In recess in January - Market Table: A market table of home made goods (jams, crafts, plants, etc) is organised after weekly church services and other occasions. Funds raised are devoted to special projects.

Music

- The Family Service on Sundays is accompanied by a music group on guitars, drums and piano.
- Taize services on the fourth Sunday of the month are accompanied by guitars and flute.
- Church Choir: The Choir is comprised of men and women’s voices and presents regularly at worship services.
- Ecumenical Choir: WCUC Choir members provide the leadership for an ecumenical choir that draws its membership from all churches in the district. Easter and Christmas cantatas are performed each year in a number of the local churches, including WCUC.
- South Canberra Youth Wind Orchestra: This group meets every week during school terms
Bible Study

- Know your Bible (That Thursday Thing): Held every Thursday morning with prayer at 9.10am,bible study at 9.30am and morning tea at 10 30am. The prayer time provides a hub for prayer networking through the Church community.
- Tuesday Evening Bible Study Group meets at 5.30pm
- Evening Bible study: Series of studies are regularly organised, particularly during the Lenten, Spring and Advent seasons.
- Other small groups meet through the week for Bible Study, prayer and support. Times and locations can be found by contacting our church office.
- Library : A reasonably well stocked library is maintained at the Church for interested readers.
Prayer and Meditation

Prayer Support: An informal prayer network informs prayer at Church gatherings with a focus on prayer support following the 9.30am Sunday worship service, at the 10.30am Praise and Fellowship meeting on Wednesdays and in the prayer time at the Know Your Bible gathering on Thursdays. Prayer support can be requested through
the Minister and members of the Church Council. - Meditation: The monthly Taize service (at 6.30pm every fourth Sunday) provides a time for quiet contemplative worship.
WCUC Community Life

- Ladies Fellowship: Ladies of the Church community meet from 11.00am to 1.00pm on the fourth Friday of each month for lunch and a speaker or theme for the day. A Fellowship of the Least Coin collection and a market table support mission work.
- Men’s Breakfasts: Held occasionally on Saturday mornings, usually with a guest speaker and a no frills breakfast. Every second gathering is usually organised jointly with the women of the Church.
- Small Groups: A network of small groups meets regularly for fellowship and discussion. Small groups help provide a deeper friendship base within the church community.
- Fellowship Dinners: Held occasionally to encourage social life across the Church community.
Exercise and Wellbeing
- UnitingCare Ageing programs: UnitingCare Ageing and Mirinjani provide exercise and wellbeing programs for the elderly. At WCUC this includes a weekly ‘Healthy and Mobile’ exercise program and a Liine Danciing class. Other activities at Mirinjani and other locations in Weston Creek are ‘Massage with Aromatherapy’, ‘Healthy Nutrition’, a “Poetry Group’ and a ‘Walking Program’. Transport is provided for an ‘Aqua-light Program’ and outings to the ‘Goyder Street Library’.
- Yoga: The Yoga Group holds classes in our building every Monday evening.
- The Canberra Physical Culture Club meets regularly in the Church building during the year.
Mission and Outreach
- Michelle Kallmier in Cambodia: The WCUC sponsors and provides financial support for Michelle’s work in Cambodia under the auspices of WEC.
- Paul and Cha Flack in Thailand: The WCUC provides financial support for Paul’s work which is currently focused on the Media video team which is developing a DVD for the Province of Chonburi in Thailand
- Jordan Winslade: The WCUC has started to support Jordan who is working with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) and currently based in Adelaide. Jordan is presently engaged in an outreach project as part of the commissioning tour of YWAM’s Mercy Ship ministry.
- Work of SIM and the Fistula Clinic in Ethiopia: The WCUC has had a long association with work in Ethiopia dating from Jonathan and Barbara Geddes work over many years through SIM with the Mursi people. More recently, Winston and Rae Newman have been working in Addis Ababa with the SIM associated Bingham Academy and the Fistula Clinic established by Dr Catherine Hamelin.
- Barnabas Ministries: Closer to home, the WCUC takes a close interest and financial support for the work of one of its past Ministers and continuing member of the congregation, the Rev Ross Kingham, who established Barnabas Ministries to provide support for church leaders coping with the stress of their responsibilities. Ross’s work has both an interdenominational and national profile.
- Kairos: Members of WCUC are active in the work of both Kairos Inside, taking the Christian message to those in prison, and Kairos Outside, providing assistance to the womenfolk of prisoners.
- Mirinjani Retirement Community: Members of WCUC are involved as residents and as volunteers in the life of the near by UnitingCare Ageing facility, including in assisting in running worship services.

Ecumenical
- Taize Community: The Canberra Taize community holds monthly prayer and meditation services at WCUC. The services are at 6.30pm on the fourth Sunday of the month. The community sponsored a retreat at Caloola Farm in February 2010 and it is expected that will be an annual event.
- Spanish Congregation: A Spanish congregation linked with the Apostolic Church worships from 2.00pm to 4.30pm each Sunday afternoon in our facilities.
